Seattle Economics Council — China-Washington State: Trade & Tariffs
SPEAKER
WSCRC Pearl Member Spencer Cohen, PhD, Economic Geography & the Political Economy of China; Senior Economist, Community Attributes (speaker bio)
TOPIC
Washington State is often cited as one of the most trade-dependent states in the union, owing to its coastal geography, global manufacturing and services firms, and strong tradition of multiculturalism and ties to Asia. The recent escalation of trade tariffs enacted by the Trump Administration on China, and countervailing measures by the Chinese government, unabated will have both near and long-term adverse impacts on trade-reliant businesses and consumers alike. Dr. Cohen will review the state of trade between Washington state and China and the potential impacts the current dispute may have on the state economy.
